In Short

1

Because we are sinful we cannot earn heaven in any way.

“There is not a righteous man on earth
who does what is right and never sins.”
Ecclesiastes 7:20

“All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags.”
Isaiah 64:6

“No one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:20,23

2

We are declared “not guilty” by God’s grace in Jesus’ life and death.

“God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8

“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.  He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”
Titus 3:4-7

3

We receive the gift of God’s grace through faith in Jesus’ work.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.”
Romans 5:1-2
