Joseph was the earthly, but not biological, father of Jesus. He was pledged to be married to a virgin named Mary who miraculously became pregnant. Joseph was quietly going to divorce Mary, but an angel visited him in a dream and told him not to do so because the child was the Messiah. A carpenter, he raised Jesus as his own child along with his and Mary’s other children (see Matthew 13:55, John 7:5, Acts 1:14, and Galatians 1:19).
