In Short

1

God wants us to pray to him and promises to hear us.

“Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”
Psalm 50:15

“The LORD is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.”
Psalm 145:18

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
Matthew 7:7

2

We can pray to him with spoken words, thoughts, or even feelings.

“This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…”
Matthew 6:9-13

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”
Romans 8:26-27

3

We also thank God in our prayers.

“I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.”
Ephesians 1:16

“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.”
Colossians 1:3

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his love endures forever.”
Psalm 118:1
